What is a Physiatrist (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physician)?
A Physiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the nonsurgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including neurological studies. Once a physiatrist graduates from medical school with a medical degree, he or she begins a rigorous four-year residency program focused on the diagnosis, evaluation and conservative treatment of both neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Physiatrists play a pivotal role in directing the rehabilitation of patients after strokes, spinal cord injuries and severe peripheral nerve trauma.
